The one when sports became a teaching partner

I've always been a bit lazy, I actually would like to say "lazy ass" to make people understand better, never loved sports, apart from the social side of them.
Why exactly am I diving with you into this topic?
Because one day I looked at myself in the mirror, I did not like my body, I was overwhelmed by my soul and I felt like no one could read my mind, not even myself.
And it’s when it gets darker that you need to take care of yourself and start somewhere.
So I started navigating a variety of disciplines, which came one after another, in the past six years. And each one of these disciplines taught me something mind blowing. As an educator, I realised I had to share all these powerful motivational tools with my students.
And now with you.

Workshop 1

Engineering Design in Elementary

Participants of this workshop will think critically about how to implement the three NGSS (Next Gen) engineering design standards for grades 3-5 in their classroom environment: 1) Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost. 2) Generate and compare multiple possible solutions to a problem based on how well each is likely to meet the criteria and constraints of the problem. 3) Plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved. With the facilitator, participants of this workshop will... 1) Unpack each standard to understand what students are expected to learn; 2) Engage in a timed engineering activity completed in an elementary school this past year; 3) Discuss if each standard has been met within the activity and/or how this and other activities can be improved to better meet the NGSS engineering design standards; & 4) As time permits, design our own engineering activities for our science students The ultimate goal by the end of this workshop is for teachers to understand more clearly how to implement engineering practices and the NGSS engineering design standards into their science curriculum. While this workshop will benefit grades 3-5 science teachers mostly, all are welcome to attend.

Action Research: how it can transform teaching and learning

In this session , participants will hear about how I transformed the teaching and learning goals of my department through an action research project. Participants will then have a chance to identify, plan and begin to implement their own action research project with feedback and suggestions given. Participants will walk away with a solid understanding of the impact of action research on not only their own practice, but the students learning.

Participants will then choose one of the following paths for more specific information

PYP (Keith Barnett and Ruth Knowles):

'The mathematical glass ceiling and how to smash through it with thinking routines.'

  1. Understanding how thinking routines support learners (function)

  2. Investigating how thinking routines support and challenge fluency and reasoning in mathematics (connection)

  3. How students view thinking routines in their learning (reflection)

Workshop 1

Helping Highly Sensitive Students (and Teachers) Thrive

Highly Sensitive People (HSP) make up about 30% of the population. The majority of them lack awareness that they have a genetic trait called Sensory Processing Sensitivity that makes them more sensitive and responsive to environmental stimuli. They face difficulties all through their developmental years and into adulthood: anxiety, overhwelm. depression, learning difficulties, lack of motivation being a few of them. The reason why awareness about HSPs is so relevant to schools is twofold:
1. Schools can be very difficult environments for Highly Sensitive children and teens. Awareness of simple changes and strategies in the classroom can make a huge difference and result in a more positive and supportive experience as their sense of self, their confidence, and sense of personal agency develop.
2. People who are Highly Sensitive tend to gravitate to the teaching profession. They care about others, want to make a difference, are very creative we have a lot of empathy. Understanding this personality trait can help educators who have it be happier, more productive and less stressed at work. Awareness can also help create a more inclusive and supportive environment in the school.
The workshop will also outline what Sensory Processing Sensitivity is, how it shows up in individuals, and what the key research has shown.

Artificial Intelligence tools for Generative Content

Riccardo Baccani

Workshop 2

As an academy of fine arts lecturer, to engage in continuous research on innovative creative processes in order to anticipate emerging practices and methodologies is a must. Since 2021, there has been a significant surge in the development of AI and Machine Learning systems specifically designed for generative multimedia content. As a CGI lecturer myself, I am particularly intrigued by the possibilities these tools offer in assisting artists and designers. Exploring how these tools can be effectively utilized not only captivates my interest but also stimulates creativity and helps conceptualize novel workflows and identify new opportunities. The aim of this speech is to showcase how contemporary AI tools can be employed in previsualization of concepts, prototyping as well as creating production-quality assets at a fraction of the usual resources.

Striking the Balance with what we know about reading and The Science of Reading

After listening to the podcast, Sold a Story, we couldn't help but dive deep into The Science of Reading and started making sifts in our own practices to better meet the needs of our students. By anchoring ourselves in Scarburogh's Reading Rope, we are on our way by striking a balance between what we used to know and what changes to make in our literacy block. Join us to unpack what components we include to base our practices in The Science of Reading on a daily basis.

How to get to know how your students think

Two of the most important products of the Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education intervention were the Science Reasoning Tasks (SRT) and The Curriculum Analysis Taxonomy (CAT). They allowed objective measurement of the cognitive readiness students bring to their learning and the demand of key scientific objectives

This workshop will interactively explore how these two sets of instruments can be applied to help plan a science curriculum and really find out how your students think and how the quality of their thinking can be fully developed.

Workshop 3

Self Portraits that Celebrate Diversity - A Creative Workshop that provides educators a fun enriching activity that promotes DEIJ

Over the years, I have discovered something commonly done by all teachers that causes young learners of color to feel discouraged, stressed, inferior and not included… When using paint with young children, many teachers refer to the color brown as yucky, and children are not encouraged to mix all colors together and make brown. It is a color that is often taught to be associated with things that are negative in the eyes of a child. As a color, brown is often not associated with positive things like the earth, tree trunks, or chocolate. I am often asked by teachers to do self-portraits with young students. When students are asked to do a self portrait, children who are Caucasian are taught that their skin color is white, pink or peach, while students of color, are often invited to use “yucky” brown, yellow or black to paint their skin color. Interestingly enough, skin color can only be created using brown made by first mixing all the primary colors together and then adding or subtracting primary colors, black or white. This workshop is based on an art lesson that I designed and have done for many years with children of all ages. It combines practical strategies and the joy of experimentation. During this workshop, teachers will learn a fun and engaging activity that they can adapt and use with their students to creatively promote and assist their young learners to discover they are all connected and represented in their classroom and school community.
